Jean-Paul Sermadiras Acting Masterclass at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy
In January 2022, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) hosted a special theatre event in Dhaka. French actor and director Jean-Paul Sermadiras came to Bangladesh with his solo performance, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man. Along with the show, he also conducted an acting masterclass at the Experimental Theatre Hall.
The event was arranged with the support of Alliance Française de Dhaka. The masterclass was open and free for local artists. Many actors, students, and theatre lovers joined the session to learn from an international theatre professional.
My Experience in the Masterclass
The workshop was very practical. Jean-Paul Sermadiras focused on basic but important acting skills. He talked about stage presence, body movement, emotions, and understanding the text. He showed things through action, not long lectures.
Even with language differences, everyone could follow the class easily. Small exercises and direct guidance made the learning clear and simple.
I joined the workshop as a participant. I saw how small changes in body language and focus could improve a performance. The hall was small and quiet, which helped everyone stay connected.
Why This Workshop Was Important
This masterclass gave Bangladeshi actors a chance to learn from a foreign theatre artist without leaving the country. It also showed how Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy supports cultural exchange and artist development. Events like this help local theatre grow stronger.
From a Photographer’s View
As a photographer, I captured moments of learning and practice. I photographed expressions, movements, and interactions between the mentor and participants. These moments show how actors learn behind the stage, before any final performance.
Final Thoughts
Taking part in this masterclass was a meaningful experience for me. It helped me understand acting in a deeper way. It also reminded me how valuable learning spaces like this are for artists in Bangladesh.
